Dodgers Revamp Lineup for Crucial Game 5; Ohtani Could Bullpen
URGENT UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers are making significant changes to their lineup ahead of a crucial Game 5 in the 2025 World Series, with the series tied at 2-2. Manager Dave Roberts is shaking things up to address his team’s offensive struggles that have persisted throughout the playoffs.
In a surprising move, Will Smith has been elevated to the No. 2 spot, while Mookie Betts shifts to third for the first time in four years. Alex Call takes over for Andy Pages, who has struggled significantly with just four hits in 50 postseason at-bats.
Roberts expressed urgency, stating, “In the postseason, you’ve got to be a little more reactive than in the regular season.” His adjustments come as the Dodgers have averaged only 3.8 runs per game this postseason, a steep drop from their regular-season average of 5.1 runs. With only a .220 batting average since the wild-card round, the Dodgers’ ability to score is critical as they strive to repeat as champions.
“When I netted out the value of what I feel gives us the best chance to win today, that was a decision I made,” Roberts added. The Dodgers are facing Toronto Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage, who has proven challenging for left-handed hitters, prompting further lineup adjustments.
As Game 5 approaches at Dodger Stadium, the stakes are high. The Dodgers must secure at least one victory in Toronto to remain in contention for the championship. Adding to the excitement, Shohei Ohtani has indicated he is prepared to contribute from the bullpen if necessary, following a disappointing loss in Game 4. He stated, “I want to stay ready to help out of the bullpen in Game 6 or 7 if needed.”
Roberts has not yet discussed this possibility with Ohtani but remains open to it, saying, “If he can go, if it makes sense, he would be an option.” Ohtani’s potential availability could provide a significant boost to a struggling Dodgers team.
Freddie Freeman, who has been a standout performer for the Dodgers, emphasized the need for the team to refocus. “We need to get back to working counts and building innings,” he said. “It’s the World Series. Sometimes you want to do a lot. I think we can reel it back in.” The Dodgers are banking on these changes to ignite their offense and reclaim momentum in this pivotal series.
As fans gear up for Game 5 on July 15, 2025, all eyes will be on how these strategic moves play out on the field. The Dodgers are looking to break free from their postseason slump and harness the talent of their revamped lineup.
