Durant Sees Hope in Rockets’ Frustration After 0-2 Start
UPDATE: The Houston Rockets are off to a rocky start this season, dropping to 0-2 after a 115-111 loss to the Detroit Pistons on October 27, 2023. Star forward Kevin Durant noted the team’s frustration but believes this energy could be pivotal for their long-term success.
Durant expressed that both players and coaches are “pissed off” about the slow start, a sentiment he views positively. “We want a better outcome, and it’s early, too,” Durant stated. “For us to feel that way, I like that kind of energy.”
In his Houston home opener, Durant delivered an impressive performance, scoring 37 points on 9-of-18 shooting and hitting 16 of 18 free throws. However, despite the support of Rockets legends Yao Ming and Hakeem Olajuwon courtside, his efforts weren’t enough to secure the win.
The game mirrored their previous loss, a 125-124 double-overtime thriller against the Oklahoma City Thunder, showcasing the Rockets’ struggles in tight games. Guard Amen Thompson emphasized the urgency to improve, stating, “We can’t keep saying that all the time. We want to play great games. We have championship-level expectations.”
With less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Rockets trailed 113-111. Durant attempted to rally his team but saw his pass to Alperen Şengun blocked by Pistons forward Paul Reed, sealing the loss as Detroit’s Cade Cunningham converted two free throws shortly after.
Durant acknowledged the challenge of balancing his offensive aggression while ensuring his teammates find their rhythm. “I got aggressive and made them double me,” he explained, noting that he scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, while no other Rocket surpassed three.
Having recently signed a two-year, $90 million contract extension, Durant has averaged 30 points per game over two outings, shooting 53% from the floor and 43% from beyond the arc.
As the Rockets look to turn their season around, the immediate focus will be on their next matchup. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the frustration Durant highlighted can transform into motivation for a much-needed victory. The urgency is palpable as the Rockets prepare to face their next challenge, with championship aspirations still in sight.
