Easton Football Triumphs Over Phillipsburg in Historic 35-6 Victory
UPDATE: Easton Area High School football team achieved a dominant 35-6 victory over rival Phillipsburg in their final game of the season, marking a historic moment for the program. This decisive win, held at Lafayette College’s Fisher Stadium on November 23, 2023, capped off a remarkable season for the Red Rovers, finishing with a record of 14-1, the best in school history.
In a thrilling display of teamwork, senior lineman Anthony Diaz lived out a lineman’s dream by scoring his first and only career touchdown after a blocked punt by teammate Sean Kilpatrick. “Last-ever football game, I think it was a perfect ending,” said Diaz, who also earned recognition as the “Outstanding Lineman” of the game. His touchdown extended Easton’s lead to 21-0 just five minutes into the second quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the match.
Kilpatrick, who played a crucial role in the game, emphasized the significance of their early momentum. “To get a big play like that, to block the punt and score off of it, I just think it was a real momentum swing,” he stated. Easton’s coach, Matt Senneca, echoed this sentiment, noting the importance of field position in such a high-stakes rivalry.
The Rovers showcased their defensive prowess, limiting Phillipsburg to just 135 yards on the ground, marking only the third time this season the Stateliners (10-3) failed to rush for over 150 yards. Senior quarterback Cole Ordway led Easton with 108 rushing yards and was named the game’s offensive MVP. “That line we have is something special. I’d take them over anybody,” Ordway expressed after the game.
The victory signifies a turnaround for Easton football, which had struggled in previous seasons. Reflecting on their journey, Macon stated, “For the past couple years, Easton football wasn’t as good… I’m glad this team put it on the map. We definitely made our stamp on history.”
This historic win not only adds to Easton’s legacy but also highlights the strong leadership and determination of its senior class. Coach Senneca praised the seniors, stating, “There’s a lot of good leaders in that group who decided they weren’t going to let the same old thing happen. They put their heads down and went to work hard.”
As the Red Rovers celebrate their victory, the impact of this game will resonate within the Easton community, inspiring future generations of athletes. The team’s resilience and dedication have turned a challenging past into a promising future, leaving a lasting mark on the program’s history.
Stay tuned for more updates on Easton football as they look to build on this success in the coming seasons.
