Frontier Airlines Exits Palm Springs Airport in Hours Amid Demand Shift
URGENT UPDATE: Frontier Airlines will cease all operations from Palm Springs International Airport in just hours, officially ending its services on November 29, 2023. The budget airline cites shifting travel demand and adjustments within the aviation sector for this sudden decision, impacting thousands of travelers who rely on flights to and from the Coachella Valley.
The announcement, made last week, confirms that Frontier will no longer offer flights to Denver and San Francisco. However, a spokesperson reassured passengers that other airlines will continue to provide these routes. “Palm Springs International Airport is not losing any nonstop destinations following Frontier’s decision to cease operations at PSP effective Nov. 29,” the spokesperson stated. United Airlines and Southwest Airlines will maintain flights to DEN, while United and Alaska Airlines will still serve SFO.
Passenger growth at Palm Springs International Airport has been robust, with a nearly 5 percent increase year-to-date compared to last year, indicating a strong demand for air travel in the region. The airport remains optimistic about its future air service options.
While Frontier exits Palm Springs, the airline is simultaneously expanding its network across the country. Last week, it launched a nonstop service from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, operating three times a week. Looking ahead, Frontier plans to introduce four new routes starting in January 2024, including flights from New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Utah, and Arizona.
On January 21, a new three-weekly nonstop service will connect Newark Liberty International Airport to Orlando International Airport, followed by a twice-weekly service from Salt Lake City International Airport to Tucson International Airport on January 22. Additionally, February will see new routes linking Miami International Airport to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, and Orlando International Airport to Pensacola International Airport.
To celebrate the launch of these new routes, Frontier will offer promotional fares starting at just $29. “These new routes will offer consumers more affordable connections across the United States beginning in early 2026,” said Josh Flyr, Vice President of Network and Operations Design at Frontier Airlines.
As Frontier Airlines shifts its focus, travelers are encouraged to explore alternative flight options available at Palm Springs International Airport. The evolving landscape of air travel continues to present both challenges and opportunities for customers as airlines respond to changing demand.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the aviation industry continues to adapt.
