GambleAware Launches Urgent Support Resources for Neurodivergent Gamblers
URGENT UPDATE: GambleAware, Britain’s leading problem gambling charity, has just announced new resources aimed at supporting neurodivergent individuals affected by gambling harm. The charity’s latest report highlights critical findings and six guiding principles designed to enhance treatment for these vulnerable players.
The report reveals alarming insights: neurodivergent individuals—including those with conditions like ADHD and autism—are often at a heightened risk of developing gambling addictions. Many gamble to cope with feelings of loneliness or due to impulsive behaviors, making them particularly susceptible to harmful gambling practices.
“For neurodivergent people, gambling can quickly become a routine, especially when tied to their interests, like sports,” said Paul Nash, an advocate with lived experience.
While Nash successfully sought treatment and redirected his life, GambleAware’s report indicates that countless others may struggle to access necessary support. Stigma and fear of judgment contribute to a lack of awareness about available resources.
To combat these issues, GambleAware is rolling out comprehensive resources tailored for therapists and practitioners. These materials, developed in collaboration with IFF Research and Ara Recovery for All, incorporate research insights and expert advice to improve the quality of care provided to neurodivergent gamblers.
GambleAware’s six key principles for effectively supporting neurodivergent players include:
- Understanding and adapting to diverse communication needs.
- Ensuring clarity and simplicity in all communications.
- Promoting autonomy and independence in support methods.
- Creating environments that accommodate sensory sensitivities.
- Encouraging self-directed approaches, including peer support networks.
- Training staff in neurodiversity awareness and communication strategies.
Anna Hargrave, CEO of GambleAware, emphasized the urgent need for these resources: “Our findings underscore the complex relationship between neurodivergence and gambling. Understanding the unique challenges these individuals face is crucial for effective treatment.”
Hargrave further explained that shame and stigma often prevent neurodivergent individuals from seeking help, making it essential to promote inclusivity through these new resources.
In an additional effort to address gambling issues, GambleAware recently published a paper examining the current state of online gambling regulations in the UK, questioning their adequacy in today’s digital landscape.
The launch of these resources marks a significant step towards addressing the urgent needs of neurodivergent gamblers. GambleAware aims not only to provide immediate support but also to foster a more inclusive environment for those affected by gambling harm.
As this situation develops, stakeholders and the public are encouraged to share this vital information to raise awareness and support neurodivergent individuals in need.
