URGENT UPDATE: The ongoing federal government shutdown is impacting the iconic Golden Gate Half Marathon in San Francisco. As a result of federal park closures, organizers have had to modify the race course, affecting thousands of participants.

Scheduled for Sunday at 6:50 a.m., the marathon will now avoid federally managed areas, including Fort Point and Hopper’s Hands. This last-minute change comes as 7,500 runners prepare to tackle the 13.1-mile course that starts at Aquatic Park and concludes at Ghirardelli Square.

Organizer Gretchen Schoenstein from Golden State Challenge confirmed, “Due to the federal government shutdown, we had to scramble to create a new route with city officials.” Unfortunately, this shift means the course cannot be officially certified by U.S. Track and Field, impacting approximately 5% of participants who need certification to qualify for larger races, such as the Boston Marathon.

This year’s participants include individuals like Carmen Gonzalez, a runner who has dreamed of competing in San Francisco for years. “I love it! Running on the Golden Gate. Seeing the ocean and everything. It’s amazing,” she said. Meanwhile, first-time half marathon runner Kayleigh Aquino expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m stoked. This is my first half marathon.”

Despite the changes, many runners remain enthusiastic. Local participant Rakesh Sharma commented, “The course correction is fine. It doesn’t really bother me as much.”

As the marathon approaches, the community is rallying around the event, highlighting the resilience and spirit of those involved. With the race just hours away, runners and spectators alike are eager to witness this modified yet celebrated annual event.
