UPDATE: California Governor Gavin Newsom is demanding accountability following a dangerous incident involving a live artillery shell that detonated prematurely during a Marine Corps celebration. The incident occurred on October 14, 2023, over Interstate 5 during training exercises marking the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary.

Authorities confirm that while no injuries were reported, shrapnel from the explosion struck two vehicles, including one in Vice President JD Vance‘s motorcade. Newsom did not hold back on social media, condemning both Vance and former President Donald Trump for what he called a reckless display that endangered lives.

“This is what the White House thought was fine to fly over civilians on a major freeway,” Newsom’s press office stated, sharing a photo of the artillery device involved. Newsom reiterated the call for a government reopening, saying, “If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.”

The controversy began last week when reports revealed that the Marine Corps planned to use live ammunition during the exercise, raising safety concerns. In a statement to The New York Times, Vance’s communications director dismissed Newsom’s worries, insisting that such demonstrations are standard practice.

However, after the shell detonated, Newsom fired back, demanding an apology from both Vance and Trump. “You accused the Governor of overreacting when he closed a portion of the freeway to protect the public,” his office posted on X. “And now we learn … live ordinance detonated early, striking a vehicle on a closed portion of the highway during the event. Without a doubt, an apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans.”

The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel did hit one of its vehicles, with CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado describing the situation as “unusual and concerning.” “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway,” Coronado stated. He emphasized that public safety remains their top priority.

The First Marine Expeditionary Force, responsible for the demonstration, stated it is currently investigating the incident. They assured the public that rigorous rehearsals had been conducted to ensure safety, claiming, “Marines fire artillery on Camp Pendleton nearly every week.”

As this story develops, all eyes will be on the responses from Vance and Trump, as well as further information from military officials regarding safety protocols in place during such exercises.

Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent situation.
