Hulu Special “HIV Unwrapped” Launches to Combat HIV Stigma
UPDATE: A groundbreaking Hulu special titled “HIV Unwrapped” is set to premiere on November 30, 2023, aiming to reshape the conversation around HIV stigma through the fusion of fashion and science. This innovative project features students from the Parsons School of Design collaborating with leading HIV scientists, creating a unique narrative that combines complex scientific themes with fashion.
Executive Producer Karl Schmid expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are taking science, really complex science, and fashion—two worlds that you don’t normally think come together, and weirdly, they do.” This special has already made waves in Australia, England, and Rwanda, and Schmid is excited to bring this important dialogue to New York City.
The show will provide an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the fashion show, showcasing the intricate process of garment creation and the collaborative efforts between designers and science experts. Schmid emphasized the power of collaboration, stating, “Just show a conversation between two people we might think are opposites… they can create something phenomenal.”
The impact of this project extends beyond the runway. Shreya Jani, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Gilead Sciences, remarked, “Fashion is a portal to creating ideas and telling a unique story. If fashion can be a portal to reminding people of the importance of ending HIV, then we’ll take it.” This sentiment underscores the importance of using creative mediums to address serious topics.
Participants like Bianca Ordoñez have shared their personal insights, emphasizing the need to highlight diverse experiences within the HIV community. “We are more than the worst thing that has happened to us… we can do incredible and be beautiful regardless of our HIV status,” Ordoñez stated.
Viewers can catch “HIV Unwrapped” streaming on Hulu starting November 30, with an airing on December 1 on the ABC Owned Television Stations’ Localish Network. The special aims to foster understanding and empathy, reminding audiences of the beauty in diversity and the importance of combating stigma surrounding HIV.
As the premiere date approaches, the conversation around HIV and its stigma is more crucial than ever. This special promises to not only entertain but also educate and inspire, making it a must-watch for anyone interested in fashion, science, and social change.
