ICE Agents Not Patrolling SF Transit, Mayor Confirms Halt
UPDATE: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are NOT patrolling public transportation in San Francisco. This announcement comes amid rising concerns from the community over the presence of federal agents on Muni vehicles.
In a statement released Saturday, the SFMTA reassured the public, stating, “We have received inquiries about the presence of ICE on Muni vehicles. There are no credible reports that ICE agents are boarding Muni buses.”
This clarification follows a significant moment on October 23, 2025, when ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were deployed to Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California. There, they faced hundreds of protesters attempting to block access to the island, underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement in the Bay Area.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie confirmed that President Donald Trump agreed to call off plans for a “surge” of federal agents in San Francisco during a phone call on Wednesday night. Mayor Lurie, along with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, advocated for a delay, arguing that the city required more time to address local crime issues with state and city law enforcement rather than through federal intervention.
As protests continue across the Bay Area, residents are encouraged to report any ICE activity through the San Francisco Rapid Response Network. This network acts as a vital resource for community members who may encounter federal agents in their neighborhoods.
The situation remains fluid, with many Bay Area residents closely monitoring developments. The public’s concerns reflect an ongoing dialogue about the balance between federal enforcement and local community safety.
For those living in San Francisco and surrounding areas, the SFMTA’s announcement offers a moment of relief, but the potential for future federal interventions still looms large. Authorities urge vigilance and community solidarity as discussions on public safety continue.
