Illinois’ ‘Balkan Five’ Transforms Team Ahead of Season Opener
UPDATE: The Illinois Fighting Illini are set for an electrifying season opener on October 2, 2025, against Jackson State, bolstered by the dynamic new lineup known as the “Balkan Five.” This unique coalition of players from the Balkans brings not just talent but a fresh energy that could reshape the team’s sound and strategy.
Freshman David Mirković, a 6-foot-9 forward from Montenegro, is one of the standout newcomers. Despite having spoken English since age six, Mirković admits that communicating during intense plays is still a challenge. “When I’m tired, it’s tough,” he says. His teammates are encouraging him to practice speaking in-game, and he reports significant improvement. The Illini’s coaching staff, including associate head coach Orlando Antigua, notes that the Balkan players often converse in their native languages, creating a vibrant, multicultural atmosphere on the court.
Joining Mirković are Tomislav Ivišić, a 7-foot-1 center, and his twin brother Zvonimir Ivišić, a 7-foot-2 junior transfer. They are complemented by Serbian point guard Mihailo Petrović, recently cleared by the NCAA to play, and Andrej Stojaković, a guard from California and son of NBA All-Star Peja Stojaković. This powerful mix not only enhances the Illini’s roster but also reflects a growing trend of international talent in college basketball.
The Illini are embracing this shift under head coach Brad Underwood, who has made significant strides in international recruiting. Antigua emphasizes that the influx of international players enriches the game, stating, “The game has become global. It only makes sense that the collegiate game will continue to grow that way.”
The team’s commitment to cultivating relationships abroad has been evident. Both Antigua and assistant coach Geoff Alexander dedicated significant time overseas this summer, scouting talent and strengthening connections. With the NCAA’s recent easing of restrictions, Illinois aims to leverage its diverse environment to attract more international players. “We treat it like domestic recruiting,” Alexander explains, highlighting the importance of building relationships with players and their families.
As the season approaches, the Illini’s revamped roster is not without its challenges. Mirković and Petrović are still acclimating to life in the U.S., navigating cultural differences and the fast-paced college game. There have been hurdles, including delays due to U.S. visa policies, but both players are optimistic about their roles on the team.
The emotional bonds among the “Balkan Five” are evident, with players supporting one another both on and off the court. Mirković and Ivišić’s established friendship played a significant role in his decision to join Illinois, while Zvonimir Ivišić saw firsthand the benefits his brother gained last season, further solidifying the family ties that bind this group.
In an intriguing twist, the team’s cultural mix is also reflected in their music playlist, now infused with Balkan beats that have become a source of inspiration and unity. “It’s club music that really brings us together,” says teammate Ben Humrichous, illustrating how music serves as a bridge between different cultures.
As the Illini prepare to face Jackson State, all eyes will be on how this diverse team navigates the challenges ahead. The stage is set for a thrilling season, and the “Balkan Five” are ready to make their mark. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this new sound translates into performance on the court.
Stay tuned for more updates as Illinois embarks on this exciting journey!
