Islam Makhachev Captures Welterweight Title in Dominant Victory
UPDATE: Islam Makhachev has made history, capturing the welterweight championship at UFC 322 with a commanding victory over Jack Della Maddalena on October 21, 2023, at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Makhachev’s unanimous decision win marks a significant milestone as he becomes a two-division champion, tying Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history with his 16th consecutive win.
Makhachev (28-1) showcased his dominance throughout the five-round bout, controlling the fight for an impressive 19 minutes and 10 seconds. He outstruck Della Maddalena (18-3) an astounding 123 to 32, utilizing effective calf kicks that left the champion struggling. “This is the dream,” Makhachev declared after the fight. “All my life I’ve fought for this. I worked hard for this moment.”
Since moving up from lightweight, Makhachev emphasized the benefits of not cutting weight, stating, “My life has changed. I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. It made this night easy.” Della Maddalena, who had not lost since his early career setbacks, found himself outmatched as Makhachev successfully executed every takedown attempt.
Despite the overwhelming control, Della Maddalena showed resilience, refusing to be finished. However, Makhachev’s strategy was clear and effective. “This was my plan, and it’s not a secret,” he stated. “All of my opponents know this, but nobody can stop it.”
As Makhachev solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history, he now turns his focus to the welterweight division, which is packed with formidable talent. Looking ahead, Makhachev has set his sights high, stating, “Open the White House,” referring to the UFC’s anticipated event targeted for 2026.
The fight at Madison Square Garden not only elevated Makhachev’s status but also captured the attention of MMA fans worldwide. His performance serves as a reminder of the relentless pursuit of greatness in professional sports, making this victory a pivotal moment in UFC history.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see what Makhachev will accomplish next in this incredibly competitive welterweight landscape. For now, his dream has become a reality, and the world of mixed martial arts is watching closely.
