Jason Kidd Evaluates Cooper Flagg as Mavericks’ Starting PG

UPDATE: Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has praised rookie Cooper Flagg for his performance as the starting point guard in the final two preseason games, but he remains noncommittal about the 18-year-old filling that role for the season opener. This uncertainty comes after the Mavericks’ impressive 121-94 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on July 26, 2023, at T-Mobile Arena.
Kidd acknowledged Flagg’s contributions but emphasized that the decision on the starting lineup will take time. “There are a lot of good, positive stories here, and so we have some time to make a decision,” Kidd stated post-game.
Flagg, who stands at 6-foot-8, transitioned to point guard after initially starting the preseason at forward, where he played during his time at Duke. In his two games as point guard, Flagg averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. His lineup included notable players like Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II.
Despite the positive stats, Kidd observed that the team’s offense lacked rhythm early in the game, as the Lakers jumped out to a 22-10 lead. Flagg exited midway through the first quarter, and the Mavericks struggled with spacing and shooting, going 3-of-15 from beyond the arc.
“He’s got to keep an index of who got shots, what was the last shot, and that’ll come with reps,” Kidd noted. “But I think [Flagg] has done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team.”
Flagg acknowledged his early struggles, stating, “I made some mental lapses today, time and score situations. Got to know [and] be aware of what’s on the clock at all times.” His defensive challenges were evident as he defended Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points in the first few minutes of the game.
Kidd recognized the challenges Flagg faces, saying, “No matter if you’re 6-4, 6-2, or 6-8, when you’re in a pick-and-roll in this league against guys who know how to run the pick-and-roll, it’s hard.” He expressed confidence in Flagg’s competitiveness and potential for growth in the role.
As the Mavericks prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Kidd’s final decision regarding Flagg’s position. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see whether the young star will secure the starting point guard role when the regular season kicks off.
This developing story will continue to unfold as the Mavericks finalize their lineup and strategies for the new season. Stay tuned for updates as the excitement builds around Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks.
