Judge Upholds Move-Out Deadline for Chicago Tenants Amid Crisis
UPDATE: A Cook County judge has just upheld a December 12 move-out deadline for residents of a Chicago apartment building that was raided by federal immigration agents, leaving tenants in a desperate scramble for housing. In an emergency Zoom hearing, Judge Debra Ann Seaton denied requests for more time and resources, insisting that the building is uninhabitable due to severe safety hazards.
Residents of the building located at 7500 South Shore Drive are now facing eviction without adequate support. Judge Seaton emphasized, “This court is not making anybody homeless,” stating that the court-appointed receiver, Friedman Communities, is working on relocation strategies. However, tenants report that these strategies consist mainly of minimal financial offers and a list of potential new apartments—many of which are unreachable.
Tenant Raymond Corona, who has lived in the building for two years, expressed frustration, stating, “Friedman is offering $2,500 up front and $2,500 after you give the keys, but that is all they’re doing.” Another resident, Larry Ashley, revealed he was only offered $1,500 and was told to vacate by Friday. “What good is the money if I don’t have anywhere to go?” he questioned.
The 7500 South Shore Tenant Union held a news conference shortly after the hearing to voice their concerns. Organizer Infiniti Gant criticized the judge’s claim that tenants had ample time to find new housing, stating, “People found out about this vacate date on November 26.” Gant added that misinformation from Friedman has exacerbated the situation, leaving residents confused and vulnerable.
In court, Jared Friedman, co-CEO of Friedman Real Estate, claimed that twelve residents have accepted relocation offers. He assured the court that security measures would be taken for the building, but tenants remain skeptical about the adequacy of the support they are receiving.
Judge Seaton’s ruling has raised alarm, particularly as Mayor Brandon Johnson previously requested an extension and additional financial resources to prevent homelessness among the tenants. He suggested that each household receive $7,500 for relocation costs. However, Seaton dismissed this intervention as “undue influence,” stressing the need for immediate action due to the dangerous conditions of the property.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the mayor emphasized that the request was made to protect tenants from becoming homeless, acknowledging the deplorable conditions of the building. “The Mayor has not been presented with a comprehensive plan to re-house the tenants by the deadline provided by the Court,” the spokesperson stated.
Amid this turmoil, tenant Darren Hightower expressed his frustration over canceled meetings with Friedman representatives. Scheduled for last Friday, the meeting was scrapped as the hearing approached, forcing him to take additional time off work to secure housing.
Residents like Raymond Corona feel they are being unfairly punished for circumstances beyond their control. “I am being forced out of my home because of a series of choices that I did not make,” he stated. The ongoing situation highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to protect vulnerable tenants facing unexpected displacement.
As the December 12 deadline looms, residents continue to seek help and clarity in a situation marked by uncertainty and distress. The impact on their lives is immediate, and the community is rallying for support in this critical moment. What will happen next for these tenants remains to be seen as they navigate a challenging path ahead.
