Kyle Hendricks Announces Retirement After 12 MLB Seasons
BREAKING: Longtime Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks is retiring from Major League Baseball after an impressive 12-year career. The announcement comes just days after his final season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he finished with an 8-10 record and a 4.76 ERA.
Hendricks, 35, is best known for his time with the Cubs, where he achieved remarkable milestones including winning the ERA title in 2016 — a year that culminated in the franchise’s first World Series championship in over a century. Over his 11 seasons with the Cubs, he secured 97 wins and maintained a solid 3.68 ERA.
Originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2011, Hendricks was acquired by the Cubs the following year. He made a splash during his MLB debut in 2014 with a stunning 2.46 ERA over 13 starts. His standout performance in 2016 featured a remarkable 16-8 record and a league-best 2.13 ERA. In the National League Championship Series, he outperformed Clayton Kershaw, pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings to help the Cubs secure their first pennant since 1945.
Hendricks’ legacy is not just about statistics; his nickname, “The Professor,” reflects his strategic mastery on the mound, despite his fastball never exceeding 90 mph. He became a mentor to younger pitchers, embodying a laid-back demeanor that resonated with teammates and fans alike.
In a touching farewell at Wrigley Field at the end of the 2024 season, Hendricks received a heartfelt curtain call after another stellar performance, throwing 7 1/3 shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Teammate Ian Happ remarked, “You could not have drawn that up any better. He’s a perfect example of what it means to be a Chicago Cub.”
Currently, Hendricks has no plans for coaching or front office roles, expressing a desire to spend quality time with his family following his successful career.
This retirement marks the end of an era for the Cubs and their fans, who will forever remember Hendricks not only for his contributions on the field but also for his character off it. As the baseball community reflects on Hendricks’ accomplishments, his impact will undoubtedly resonate for years to come.
