The newly released video showcases stunning concept art and animation techniques that highlight the breathtaking aerial views of Portland. It introduces viewers to the character of the General, a majestic eagle voiced by Angela Bassett, whose design is a testament to Laika’s commitment to artistry. The production team crafted intricate models inspired by nature, featuring 9,000 individual feathers on specially designed puppets tailored for both flight scenes and detailed performances.
Directed by Travis Knight, known for his work on Bumblebee, Wildwood is set to be released in 2026 and is based on the beloved 2011 children’s fantasy novel by Colin Meloy. The story follows young Prue McKeel and her classmate Curtis as they venture into a magical forest to rescue her missing baby brother, Mac, with the help of the General.
The video highlights the meticulous craftsmanship behind Laika’s animation, emphasizing how the team pours “creativity into every joint, feather, and frame.” As the General takes to the skies, viewers are reminded of the emotional depth and innovation that characterize Laika’s films.
As anticipation builds for Wildwood, fans are eager to see how Laika will combine its signature stop-motion techniques with a compelling narrative. The voice cast also includes talents like Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, and Amandla Stenberg, promising a diverse and engaging storytelling experience.
