UPDATE: In an urgent move ahead of the regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers have named Gabe Vincent as a starter to fill in for the injured LeBron James for their opener against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, October 24, 2025. This decision comes as the Lakers wrap up a challenging preseason, finishing with a disappointing record of 1-5 after a narrow 117-116 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

Vincent showcased his skills during training camp, scoring 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the final preseason game. He previously impressed by scoring 18 points in just four minutes against the Dallas Mavericks. “I just bring what I’ve been doing since I’ve been here,” Vincent stated, emphasizing his defensive contributions and ability to create plays.

LeBron James continues his recovery from sciatica, with sources indicating he is not expected to return to the lineup until mid-November. This leaves Vincent, alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton, and Rui Hachimura, to lead the Lakers into the new season. Coach JJ Redick acknowledged that while Vincent is in the starting lineup, adjustments may be necessary throughout the season due to injuries and matchups.

Redick, who has utilized 25 different starting lineups in previous seasons, stressed the importance of flexibility. “I have a pretty good idea who’s going to start Game 1, after that, I don’t know,” he explained. The Lakers will need to refine their strategy, especially after allowing the Kings to score 59 second-half points and shoot 54.7% overall.

The physicality of the team has also come under scrutiny, particularly after center Jaxson Hayes exited the game with a right wrist contusion. Fortunately, X-rays returned negative, and the team expects to provide an update during practice on Sunday. In the meantime, former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart has pledged to enhance the team’s toughness, stating, “Just follow my lead. I’m going to try to set the tone each and every night.”

As the clock ticks down to the season opener, the Lakers face a critical moment to solidify their roster and strategy. Fans are eagerly awaiting how these developments will unfold against the Warriors, making this a pivotal time for the franchise.
