Law Enforcement Prepares for Holiday Cheer, Shops for 417 Kids
UPDATE: In an urgent push to bring holiday joy, local law enforcement and Sunbeam Family Services in Oklahoma City are already gearing up for Christmas, shopping for 417 children just weeks before the holiday season. This heartfelt effort began on Wednesday as they selected toys that will be crucial for many families this Christmas.
“For some of those families, this may be the only toys that they get,” said SGT. Tara Hardin of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office. The initiative aims to ensure that every child experiences the joy of the season, especially those from families in need.
With less than two months until Christmas, local law enforcement officers scoured store aisles, carefully crafting carts filled with toys for a significant holiday giveaway event scheduled for December. “This will culminate in a huge event where Santa, elves, and even the Grinch will be present,” SGT. Hardin added, emphasizing the joy this event brings to the community.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the “grandparents raising grandchildren” shopping event, showcasing a long-standing commitment to community support by Sunbeam Family Services.
Beyond the holiday shopping, the organization offers extensive support for families enrolled in their programs. “We have a lot of wraparound services that this has expanded into, including mental health support for our grandparents and grandchildren if needed,” said Brandi Rettman, Careteam Coordinator for Sunbeam Family Services. They also conduct various events throughout the year, such as back-to-school supply drives and fun water events.
As local law enforcement officers examined each shopping list, they expressed their dedication to ensuring that no family has to choose between essential needs and the joy of Christmas. “Christmas should be fun. We are thrilled and delighted to be a part of that,” SGT. Hardin declared, highlighting the emotional impact of their efforts.
