URGENT UPDATE: Massachusetts animal shelters are taking a bold step to find homes for adult dogs by waiving adoption fees starting next week. The weeklong holiday event, titled “Snow Place Like Home,” will run from December 8 to December 14, 2023, and targets dogs aged one and older.

The MSPCA-Angell, along with five partner shelters, is leading this initiative to combat a troubling decline in dog adoptions, especially among larger breeds. “We started the coalition last year with the goal of reducing euthanasia in shelters across the state and improving the overall well-being of animals that call the Commonwealth home,” said Jamie Garabedian, project manager in the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division.

Garabedian emphasizes the importance of this campaign, stating that many misconceptions about adopting older dogs deter potential adopters. “A lot of people think older dogs can’t be playful or energetic,” she explained. “Likewise, many assume bigger dogs require hours of exercise daily, but all dogs have unique needs.”

This promotional event is particularly crucial as adoption rates for adult dogs have plummeted. The shelters hope that by removing the adoption fees, they can encourage families to consider these loving companions, who have much life and joy to share.

Participating shelters include a coalition of local facilities dedicated to finding homes for dogs in need. More information about the event and the animals available for adoption can be found at mspca.org/dogs.

This holiday season, make a difference by adopting an adult dog and giving them the loving home they deserve. With the “Snow Place Like Home” initiative, Massachusetts shelters are ready to welcome your family into the lives of these wonderful pets. Don’t miss this opportunity to bring joy home!
