NCAA Women’s Basketball Season Kicks Off with Major Storylines
UPDATE: The NCAA women’s basketball season has officially begun, and with it, critical questions are emerging about the future of several key teams. As of now, all eyes are on No. 15 Notre Dame and the young squad from Illinois, both of which are aiming for a successful run in the NCAA Tournament.
What’s happening NOW? The Irish, under the leadership of Hannah Hidalgo, look to break free from their recent Sweet 16 exits, having lost there in four consecutive seasons. After a disappointing 71-62 defeat to TCU last season, the team is eager to prove itself this year. Hidalgo, a preseason All-American, returns after averaging 23.8 points per game last season. She is joined by transfers including Vanessa de Jesus from Duke and Iyana Moore from Vanderbilt, as well as returning guard Cassandre Prosper.
The Irish face tough competition early, with ranked matchups against No. 13 Michigan on November 15 and No. 18 USC on November 21. Coach Niele Ivey maintains high expectations, stating, “Notre Dame is the standard…the expectation never changes.”
Meanwhile, Illinois is navigating a youth movement after losing five key seniors, including leading scorer Kendall Bostic. The team’s average age is just 19.91, posing both challenges and opportunities. Coach Shauna Green is relying on junior guards Gretchen Dolan and Jasmine Brown-Hagger to lead this fresh roster. They will be bolstered by new additions like Cearah Parchment, a 6-foot-3 forward. Green expressed excitement about the team’s potential, saying, “They have a joy to them…They’re so coachable.”
As the season progresses, Northwestern’s Joe McKeown prepares for his final campaign, having announced his retirement after this season. The Wildcats aim to send him off on a high note, despite recent struggles. Senior Grace Sullivan is expected to step up as a key player, averaging 10.1 points last season.
In Chicago, Jill Pizzotti has taken the helm at DePaul after the retirement of long-time coach Doug Bruno. With a strong emphasis on rebuilding, Pizzotti aims to lead the Blue Demons to a top-four finish in the Big East. Despite injury challenges for players like Kate Clarke, Pizzotti remains optimistic about their chances this season.
The Big Ten landscape is also shifting, with UCLA remaining a dominant force. With six teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 including No. 3 UCLA and No. 10 Maryland, the competition is fierce. Senior center Lauren Betts, a frontrunner for Big Ten Player of the Year, is expected to lead UCLA after a strong previous season averaging 20.2 points per game.
As teams gear up for crucial matchups, the excitement surrounding women’s college basketball is palpable. Fans and analysts alike are keen to see whether the Irish can surpass their recent hurdles and if Illinois’ youth can rise to the occasion. This season promises to deliver thrilling action and dramatic storylines that are sure to captivate audiences.
