Oak Forest’s Andrew Dawson Leads Bengals to Class 5A Semifinals
UPDATE: Oak Forest High School’s standout player, Andrew Dawson, propelled the Bengals to a thrilling 34-20 victory over Peoria in the Class 5A state quarterfinals, marking a significant milestone for the team. This victory secures Oak Forest’s first state semifinal appearance since 2007.
Dawson, a senior receiver who also plays linebacker and special teams, showcased his all-around talent by catching a crucial go-ahead touchdown and recovering an onside kick. His performance is a testament to his competitive spirit, as he passionately stated, “Competition is a big part of me. I can’t just sit around. Sports keeps me busy all the time.”
The Bengals, now boasting an impressive 11-1 record, will face Providence (9-3) at 1 p.m. on Saturday in New Lenox. Dawson, who stands at 6 feet 2 inches and weighs 190 pounds, has been a pivotal player for Oak Forest, racking up 14 receptions for 316 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 22.5 yards per catch. He has also contributed defensively with 54 tackles, six interceptions, and three sacks.
Dawson’s drive to win is echoed by head coach Zac Sadek, who remarked, “There’s not a kid who is more competitively driven in everything he’s done.” Sadek highlighted Dawson’s resilience, recalling a moment in a prior playoff game when he insisted on staying on the field despite an injury.
With a close friendship with senior quarterback Daniel Chopp since childhood, Dawson’s synergy with Chopp has been a game changer. Chopp noted, “We have a great energy and dynamic. I just love how he plays. He’s aggressive and brings high energy.”
Dawson’s athletic talent runs in the family, with a father who played college baseball and an older brother, Joshua, now serving in the U.S. Army. Joshua’s influence has been profound, as Andrew reflected, “He’d pull the blankets off me and tell me I had to get to work.”
This Saturday’s matchup against Providence carries immense significance as Oak Forest aims for its first state championship appearance. Dawson is determined, stating, “We’re going in with the will to win. I always go after it 100%, even if I’m blocking. I’ll do anything for this team and this program.”
With Dawson leading the charge, the Bengals are poised for an exciting showdown. Fans and supporters are encouraged to rally behind the team as they vie for a title that has eluded them for nearly two decades. Stay tuned for updates as Oak Forest continues its historic playoff run.
