Oklahoma City Fire Launches Urgent Pet Reunification Initiative

UPDATE: Oklahoma City Fire is urgently launching a new initiative aimed at reuniting lost pets with their owners. As of today, two fire stations in Oklahoma City are equipped with microchip scanners, enabling quicker identification and reunification of lost animals.

Officials highlight the pressing need for this service. “Pets do get loose, you know, for whatever reason, they run off a leash or escape a fence,” stated Scott Douglas from the Oklahoma City Fire Department. This initiative is designed to significantly reduce the time pets spend away from their homes.

If you find a lost pet, simply bring it to one of the designated fire stations—Fire Station 30 at 4343 S. Lake Hefner Dr. or Fire Station 25 at 2701 SW 59th St.. Firefighters will scan the microchip, if present, to retrieve the owner’s information. “It’s just neighbors looking out for neighbors,” added Douglas, emphasizing the community aspect of the initiative.

The new program has already shown promising results. Douglas recounted a recent incident where a dog named Sue Magoo was quickly reunited with its owner after being scanned at Fire Station 30. “The whole process took just minutes,” he said, showcasing the effectiveness of their efforts.

Beyond reunification, Oklahoma City Fire aims to alleviate pressure on the city’s animal welfare system. “The initiative behind this is to not overcrowd the animal welfare facilities,” Douglas explained, underscoring their commitment to community welfare.

Currently, only Fire Stations 30 and 25 have microchip scanners, and while they facilitate reunification, they do not house pets if the owner is untraceable. This initiative is a significant step forward in ensuring that lost pets can find their way back home swiftly.
