UPDATE: As the federal government shutdown disrupts SNAP benefits for thousands of Oklahomans, several restaurants in Oklahoma City are urgently stepping up to assist families in need. Local establishments are offering free meals to families affected by the loss of food assistance, a lifeline for many struggling to feed their children.

At Taquitos Feliz located at NW 23rd Street and MacArthur Blvd., owner Roberto Brambila has reported a surge in customers seeking help. “I’m pretty sure it was well over 100 people,” Brambila stated, highlighting the overwhelming demand since the benefits were cut off at the beginning of this month.

This unexpected influx of diners, primarily families reliant on SNAP, has not translated into profit for the restaurant. “No, not in this case,” Brambila confirmed, emphasizing the importance of community support over financial gain. He expressed his commitment to helping those in need: “I like to help them out whenever I can. And I thought this was a really good opportunity for us to do something nice.”

Families who walk into Taquitos Feliz with at least one child and an EBT card can enjoy a free meal, with options including tacos, burritos, or quesadillas. Despite the financial hit, Brambila remains dedicated to his mission of assisting families during this difficult time. “I love helping people out. That’s—I mean, that’s what I love to do,” he added.

The spirit of giving extends beyond Taquitos Feliz. Taco Casa locations across the metro are also providing free meals for children whose families present an EBT card at the register. Additionally, Oliver’s Pizzeria in Oklahoma City will be giving away free large one-topping pizzas to anyone showing a valid SNAP or EBT card this Monday between 2 and 6 p.m.

Community members are rallying behind these efforts. Regular customer Gil Torres witnessed the generosity at Taquitos Feliz and felt compelled to contribute. After making a quick ATM visit, he returned to the restaurant to pay it forward, expressing gratitude to Brambila: “Thank you for what you’re doing.”

Brambila responded warmly, “Thank you. I really appreciate that.” This exchange highlights the profound human connection emerging in the face of adversity. Torres emphasized the importance of unity during challenging times: “This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human. And let’s help our fellow humans out.”

As families continue to navigate the hardships brought on by the government shutdown, these local restaurants are providing not just meals but also hope and community support. The urgency of these efforts cannot be overstated, as thousands of Oklahomans look for ways to feed their children amidst uncertainty.

With the situation rapidly evolving, residents are encouraged to visit these restaurants and take advantage of the support available. This is a developing story, and further updates on local initiatives to assist affected families will follow.
