One in Three Californians Slash Food Spending Amid Price Surge
New reports confirm that one in three Californians has cut back on food spending to save money, highlighting a growing crisis as grocery prices continue to soar. A recent survey from the Public Policy Institute of California reveals that nearly 30% of residents statewide have reduced their food purchases over the past year, with lower-income households feeling the pinch the hardest.
The survey, conducted between October 16 and 30, 2025, found that 50% of low-income Californians reported spending less on food. This comes as food prices have surged by about 3% nationwide over the past year, driven by ongoing inflation and recently imposed tariffs on imported goods.
Compounding these issues, millions of Californians faced disruptions in their food assistance benefits this month as federal payments were delayed during the government shutdown. The California Department of Social Services reported that 5.3 million recipients of the SNAP program were affected, forcing many to rely on food banks across the Bay Area. Although assistance is resuming, new work requirements under President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill are set to take effect next month, raising fears that millions may ultimately lose their benefits.
Mark Baldassare, the survey director at the Public Policy Institute, stated,
“Californians have been gloomy about the economy and affordability for several years now, and it’s altering their big-picture thinking.”
This sentiment is reflected in the survey, which shows that nearly 70% of Californians anticipate serious economic challenges in the coming year.
Despite these concerns, three-quarters of respondents expressed some level of satisfaction with their household’s financial situation. The survey also revealed overwhelming support for increased public spending on job training (78%), childcare programs (73%), and a new government health insurance option (79%). However, confidence in elected officials to tackle economic issues remains low, with only 52% backing Gov. Gavin Newsom and just 27% supporting President Trump.
As food prices and economic uncertainty continue to affect daily lives, Californians are urged to stay informed on the evolving situation. The urgency of these developments highlights the need for immediate solutions and increased support for vulnerable populations across the state.
For those impacted by recent changes, local food banks and assistance programs remain crucial resources as California navigates these challenging times. Stay tuned for updates on the implementation of new SNAP work requirements and further developments in the ongoing economic landscape.
