Phil Olivier, Beloved Educator and Musician, Passes Away at 87
BREAKING NEWS: Phil Olivier, a cherished educator and passionate musician, has passed away at the age of 87 in Santa Cruz, California, following a prolonged illness. He peacefully departed in the early morning hours of December 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration.
Born on August 16, 1937, in San Francisco, Olivier devoted his life to education and the arts. He graduated from UC Berkeley with degrees in sociology and education and began his teaching career at Kensington School in Berkeley. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Kaye Olivier. In 1968, the family relocated to Santa Cruz, where Phil taught at Bradley School in Corralitos for nearly three decades.
Phil’s passion for the great outdoors was evident in his family’s summer travels, camping across the western United States. The Sierra Nevada mountains, particularly around Tuolumne Meadows, were a source of renewal for him. His zest for life was contagious, inspiring many with his adventurous spirit.
In addition to teaching, Phil was a talented musician known for his rich bass-baritone voice. He spent over 30 years singing with the Cabrillo Chorus, filling homes and neighborhoods with music. His talents extended to photography, writing, and hiking, making him an enthusiastic naturalist and traveler.
Phil was not just a remarkable individual; he was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife Kaye, sons Scot and Jordan, daughters-in-law Jong and Jill, daughter Robin, and grandchildren Andrew, Kelsey, Ryan, Sean, Rachel, Noah, and Matteo. His family recalls his infectious laughter and sense of humor, which brought joy to every gathering.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ruth, his son Christopher, and his older brother Barry. His family is deeply grateful to Dr. Adam Yarme, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and caregiver Cameron for their compassionate care during his final days.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Aptos on January 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Phil’s name to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, The Alzheimer’s Association, or the SPCA of Santa Cruz County.
Phil Olivier’s remarkable life touched many, and while he will be sorely missed, his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.
