Richard Gere Reveals Dalai Lama’s Key Parenting Advice Now
UPDATE: In a heartfelt interview, actor Richard Gere, 76, shares the most crucial parenting lesson he wants his sons to learn, inspired by the wisdom of the Dalai Lama. The actor emphasizes the importance of kindness, a message that resonates deeply in today’s world.
Gere’s insights were revealed in an interview with People Magazine published on October 7, 2023. He stated, “You show kindness. That’s the best thing you can do,” underscoring his commitment to instilling this value in his three sons.
The actor, known for his roles in films like “Pretty Woman”, has been a practicing Buddhist since 1978 and maintains a long-standing friendship with the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. Gere recounted a powerful moment in which the Dalai Lama advised a couple on how to raise a child, highlighting the significance of teaching children to respect all forms of life, even insects. “Teach them to be kind to insects,” Gere recalled the Dalai Lama saying, “That’s something that carries over into all of your life.”
This profound message comes at a time when the world faces increasing challenges, making the need for compassion and kindness more vital than ever. Gere’s parenting philosophy not only reflects his personal values but also connects with a broader audience seeking guidance on nurturing future generations.
In addition to his parenting advice, Gere discussed his ongoing spiritual journey that began in his 20s. He noted the quest for meaning and purpose, a struggle many can relate to. “What is this? Why am I here?” he reflected, emphasizing the importance of finding depth and significance in life.
As a producer of the upcoming documentary “Wisdom of Happiness,” featuring the Dalai Lama, Gere continues to explore these themes. The film, which premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in October 2024, further showcases his dedication to spreading the Dalai Lama’s message of compassion.
Gere’s connection with the Dalai Lama was first established in the Himalayas, where he experienced the spiritual leader’s genuine and approachable nature. “He’s completely simple and direct and honest,” Gere shared, likening their conversations to those with a beloved family member or respected mentor.
As the world grapples with division and strife, Gere’s emphasis on kindness serves as a powerful reminder of the values that can unite us. His commitment to passing on these lessons to his children is a call to action for parents everywhere.
