URGENT UPDATE: The nonprofit Safe Space Winter Shelter has just announced its annual winter shelter program, set to run from December 21 to March 1, 2025, at five local churches in Chico, California. This year, the shelter will offer extended morning hours at its newly launched drop-in center, providing crucial support for the homeless community.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. daily, guests can arrive at the nonprofit’s office located at 1909 The Esplanade. From there, a shuttle service will transport them to one of the five partnering churches, including Chico First Baptist Church and Faith Lutheran Church, where they can stay overnight. The initiative aims to ensure that individuals have a warm place to sleep and the opportunity to stay indoors until noon the next day.

Chrissi Overlock, the Shelter Operation Coordinator, emphasized the importance of these extended hours, stating, “This will hopefully make people’s mornings easier and keep people warmer.” After spending the night at a church, guests are encouraged to visit the Radical Resilience program at the nonprofit’s office, available from 8 a.m. to noon. The program offers snacks, device charging, restroom access, and one-on-one case management—essential services for those in need.

The winter shelter program operates entirely on volunteer efforts, which Overlock describes as the “heart of its organization.” There are no sobriety requirements, couples can stay together, and limited pets are welcome, making the shelter a compassionate option for many.

Earlier this year, the Safe Space Winter Shelter opened its drop-in center, responding to the urgent need for a supportive environment. Overlock noted the challenges faced by case managers, explaining, “People living on the street move out of survival,” making it difficult for them to access necessary services. The Radical Resilience program helps bridge that gap by providing a stable location for individuals to connect with case managers.

The new office, which opened in October 2024, has been significantly improved to accommodate the needs of its clients, including dedicated office spaces for case managers and a communal area where guests can find refuge. Overlock highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere: “They know that there’s stuff here for them and that they’re not going to get discriminated against or told to leave.”

As the cold winter months approach, the Safe Space Winter Shelter is ramping up its efforts to provide essential services and support for those who are vulnerable. The program not only aims to keep guests warm but also focuses on fostering connections that can lead to long-term solutions for homelessness.
