UPDATE: The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to close its offices for a full 48 hours in observance of Thanksgiving, which falls on November 27. This urgent announcement comes just hours before the closures, scheduled for Thursday, November 23, and Friday, November 24.

During this time, Americans will be unable to access essential in-person services, including applying for new or replacement Social Security cards, making benefit changes, and assisting Medicare beneficiaries with prescription drug costs. The temporary shutdown underscores the importance of planning ahead for those who rely on these vital services.

The SSA has advised individuals that they can still manage their benefits online. By creating a personal my Social Security account, users can apply for retirement, Medicare, and disability benefits without leaving their homes. This online portal also allows users to check their application status, print benefit verification letters, and update personal information such as email addresses and direct deposit details.

To create an account, users must choose between two secure options: ID.me or Login.gov. The SSA emphasizes that both options meet federal security standards. Those living outside the U.S. or without a Social Security number are required to select ID.me for identity verification.

To set up a my Social Security account, applicants need a personal email address, a form of ID, their Social Security number, and a U.S. phone number. Additionally, they must have the capability to take and upload photos of their ID and complete multi-factor authentication.

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, it’s critical for Americans to take action now to ensure their Social Security needs are met. The closures will also occur again in December for Christmas, making it crucial to utilize the SSA’s online services effectively.

Stay tuned for further developments as the SSA continues to provide updates on these temporary office closures.
