Spurs Honor Popovich with New Banner During Home Opener
UPDATE: The San Antonio Spurs have unveiled a new banner celebrating Gregg Popovich‘s legendary career during their home opener on October 29, 2023. The banner, which marks Popovich’s record of 1,390 regular-season wins, was displayed without ceremony, reflecting the coach’s preference for a low-key tribute.
Fans were first greeted by the banner as they entered the AT&T Center, where it now hangs alongside the jerseys of Spurs legends like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and David Robinson. This unique banner features five stars at the top, symbolizing the five NBA championships won under Popovich’s guidance, and is distinct in design from the others, which resemble traditional jersey shapes.
Popovich, who stepped down as head coach in May 2023, remains a pivotal figure in the organization as president after becoming the all-time winningest coach in NBA history. His departure followed a health scare when he suffered a stroke at the Spurs’ arena on November 2, 2024, leading to a significant moment in Spurs history.
The timing of the banner’s unveiling reflects the team’s deep respect for Popovich’s legacy, choosing to honor him in a manner consistent with his personality. The Spurs’ decision to keep the event private underscores their commitment to honoring a coach who has emphasized humility throughout his career.
As fans continue to react to this emotional tribute, the Spurs are looking ahead to a new season filled with promise. The organization is poised to continue building on the foundation laid by Popovich.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Spurs season progresses and we honor the legacy of one of basketball’s greatest coaches.
