UPDATE: The Stockton community is in shock following a devastating mass shooting that claimed the lives of four individuals, including three children, during a child’s birthday party on October 14, 2023. The victims, aged 8, 9, 14, and 21, were part of a celebration that turned tragic, leaving 11 others injured, including a 9-year-old child.

As the community mourns and searches for answers, mental health experts are highlighting the crucial need for emotional support in the aftermath of this tragedy. Dr. Amy Parks, Executive Director of NAMI Fresno, emphasized the importance of addressing the trauma, particularly for children who may struggle to process such events.

“It is sad. It is scary and confusing,” Dr. Parks stated, urging adults to share information with children at an age-appropriate level while allowing them to ask questions. Creating a safe space for discussions about feelings is vital as children navigate their emotions after witnessing violence.

Parents and guardians are advised to be vigilant for signs of distress in children, such as changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, or increased anxiety. “If you see that a child’s sleep routine might be a little disruptive, they’re having more nightmares or waking up a lot, that might be a symptom they’re having difficulty processing,” Dr. Parks noted.

Adults are also encouraged to acknowledge their emotions, as experiencing negative feelings is a common reaction to trauma. “We try to push them away,” Dr. Parks said. “It’s really important to feel them. The more you let yourself feel it, the more your brain is going to process those feelings.”

In the wake of this tragedy, experts recommend focusing on gratitude as a way to foster resilience and improve mental health. “There is science behind the more you focus on gratitude consistently every day, it rewires your brain to feel more positive mental health,” Dr. Parks added.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, community leaders are rallying to provide support and resources for those affected. It is a critical time for Stockton residents to unite and begin the healing process together.
