Suspect Found Guilty of Murdering 88-Year-Old Woman in SF
UPDATE: In a critical verdict delivered just moments ago, Keonte Gathron has been found guilty of the **murder** of **88-year-old Yik Oi Huang** in **San Francisco**. The jury confirmed Gathron’s culpability in **25 counts**, including the fatal attack on Huang, marking a significant moment for justice and community healing.
**District Attorney Brooke Jenkins** announced the verdict, stating, “We are pleased to announce Mr. Gathron has been found guilty of numerous counts. Most importantly, in the murder of Mrs. Huang, an 88-year-old grandmother who was simply out doing her morning exercise.” This conviction comes after years of waiting for Huang’s family, who have endured unimaginable pain since the incident.
On **January 28, 2019**, Huang was attacked during her morning walk at a park in **Visitacion Valley**. Gathron brutally assaulted her, leaving her for dead before fleeing into her home across the street. Authorities later apprehended him following another robbery. Tragically, Huang succumbed to her injuries on **January 3, 2020**, at **Laguna Honda Hospital**.
A GoFundMe account established in Huang’s honor noted, “She suffered through the massive pain and had been clinging for her life courageously.” This heartbreaking situation highlights the severe impact of street violence, particularly against vulnerable community members.
Gathron also faced multiple counts related to other crimes, including **robberies and carjackings** prior to Huang’s murder. Jenkins emphasized, “The most pronounced is the murder of Mrs. Huang,” which also included the robbery at her home. Notably, Gathron has been linked to several assaults, with many victims being of **Asian descent**.
As the case moves towards sentencing, Gathron faces the possibility of **life in prison**. The community remembers Huang through the newly renamed **The Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park**, established in **June 2024** to promote healing and solidarity among residents.
