Tens of Thousands Rally in Southern California for ‘No Kings’ Protests

UPDATE: Tens of thousands are taking to the streets across Southern California for the urgent ‘No Kings’ protests, with significant gatherings reported in Los Angeles, Venice, and Oakhurst. The rallies, held on October 14, 2023, have drawn a diverse crowd of peaceful demonstrators, showcasing a strong stance against perceived authoritarianism in the country.
The protests are a response to comments made by House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Trump, who labeled rally participants as “anti-American terrorists.” Participants, however, are emphasizing their patriotic duty to uphold democracy, protesting what they view as Trump’s unlawful behavior and disrespect for the Constitution.
In a powerful moment at the rally in Venice, Mark Ryavec shared how he wore a treasured cap from his father, a veteran of the USS Lawrence. “It wasn’t me, it was my dad,” he expressed emotionally after receiving thanks for his service, symbolizing the deep connections many have to service and sacrifice.
The Los Angeles area alone saw over 10,000 attendees, with signs reflecting a mix of humor and seriousness. One protester noted a sign stating, “No kings in America since 1776,” a sentiment echoed throughout the crowd. Another attendee, Dennis Byrnes, aged 82, highlighted his lengthy service in aerospace, noting, “I will fight against the fascist takeover to my last breath.”
Rallies have sparked discussions around voter engagement, with many urging fellow citizens to participate in the upcoming midterm elections. Liz Brown from Simi Valley stressed the importance of translating protest energy into electoral action, stating, “We cannot allow our country to become a dictatorship. It’s up to us.”
As the protests continue to unfold, organizers are calling for unity, suggesting participants wear blue at future events to symbolize solidarity. “Team blue ain’t yellow!” one organizer emphasized in an email to supporters, advocating for a cohesive message moving forward.
The ‘No Kings’ rallies reflect a growing movement across the nation, with demonstrators united in their vision for a democratic future. The events are not just protests; they represent a critical moment for many Americans, urging reflection on the values that define the nation.
As this situation develops, all eyes are on the impact these protests will have on the political landscape leading up to the midterm elections. For many, the message is clear: now is the time to act.
