Thieves Target EV Chargers in LA, Causing Costly Repairs

URGENT UPDATE: Thieves are wreaking havoc on electric vehicle (EV) chargers across Los Angeles, endangering the city’s push towards a zero-emissions future. Reports confirm that criminals are targeting charging stations for valuable copper wire, cutting cords and even dismantling chargers with hacksaws. This alarming trend not only disrupts EV access but also racks up significant repair costs.
Officials at the L.A. Cleantech Incubator (LACI) are sounding the alarm. CEO Matt Peterson stated, “We don’t want to show the world a city where all the EV chargers are clipped with copper theft.” With the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, maintaining a robust EV infrastructure is more critical than ever.
Currently, there are approximately 60,630 public and workplace EV chargers in the greater Los Angeles area, making them prime targets for thieves. According to experts, the rise in metal prices, especially copper, is fueling this wave of vandalism. “Cutting a connector doesn’t fall under warranty,” warned Kameale Terry, CEO of Charger Help. “For level two chargers, repair costs can range from $650 to $700, while DC fast chargers can escalate to $1,500.”
In response to this growing issue, California lawmakers are backing AB 476, a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that imposes stricter penalties on those caught purchasing stolen copper. This legislation is seen as a necessary step to deter theft and protect the burgeoning EV infrastructure.
To combat these thefts, charging companies are innovating rapidly. Solutions being explored include cables designed to disconnect from chargers, wireless charging options, and enhanced cable protection that even sprays ink if cut. “We need to build better products where you can’t just simply cut the connector,” urged Terry.
The situation is urgent. As more chargers are installed in accessible locations, the risk of vandalism increases. The community is rallying to support these efforts, highlighting the importance of sustainable transportation for a cleaner future.
Keep an eye on developments as authorities and businesses work together to safeguard EV chargers and ensure Los Angeles remains on track for its ambitious environmental goals.
