Top Recruit Dooney Johnson Commits to Gonzaga, Shakes Up 2027 Class
BREAKING: Dooney Johnson, the highly touted No. 28 recruit in the 2027 class according to ESPN, has officially committed to Gonzaga University just two days after his official visit. The 6-foot-5 wing from Milwaukee is the highest-ranked prospect to join Mark Few’s program since Chet Holmgren, Hunter Sallis, and Nolan Hickman in the 2021 recruiting class.
Johnson’s decision is a significant boost for Gonzaga, which faced stiff competition from top programs including Indiana, Syracuse, LSU, Missouri, and Wake Forest. Local favorites Marquette and Wisconsin were also in the mix. Johnson’s commitment underscores the potential for elite talent to emerge from Milwaukee, a city that has seen many top athletes choose prep schools instead.
In an exclusive interview with ESPN on July 15, Johnson shared his thoughts on the recruiting process: “It was a really good process. Me and Gonzaga have been talking all throughout the year. The conversation we’ve had has been great.” His official visit solidified his choice, allowing him to connect personally with the program.
Johnson, who averaged 25.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season for Milwaukee Juneau High School, expressed admiration for Gonzaga’s community. He highlighted the recent support shown for teammate Tyon Grant-Foster, who was recently cleared to play after a challenging battle for eligibility. “It was how they all fought for him and went to court for him… It made me feel special,” Johnson noted.
His father, Torre Johnson Jr., emphasized the importance of staying local, stating, “We represent the Milwaukee kids. That’s another reason why we stayed in Milwaukee and didn’t go to a prep school.” He hopes their commitment will inspire other athletes to pursue Division I opportunities from public schools.
The connection to former Gonzaga star Jalen Suggs, whom Torre Johnson coached during the grassroots circuit, also played a pivotal role in Dooney’s decision. “That’s my guy,” Johnson said. “I’ve always looked up to him.”
As Gonzaga aims for a national title, Johnson is eager to contribute to the team’s success. “Coach Few is a winner. Gonzaga is a winner. It’s a great program,” he affirmed.
With this commitment, Gonzaga strengthens its roster and continues to build on its reputation as a powerhouse in college basketball. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Johnson embarks on his journey with the Bulldogs.
