Toyota’s New V-8 Engine Expands Beyond Supercars, Reveals Potential
UPDATE: Toyota’s new V-8 engine is set to revolutionize more than just supercars, potentially powering a wider range of vehicles, including the iconic Land Cruiser. In a groundbreaking interview with Australian media, Takashi Uehara, head of powertrains at Toyota, confirmed that the engine could fit under the Land Cruiser (LC300)‘s hood, marking a significant shift in the company’s engine strategy.
Uehara disclosed that the V-8’s engine block shares similarities with the new 2.0-liter engine currently being tested in a prototype of the GR Yaris M. This modularity hints at the V-8’s adaptability across various models, making it a versatile addition to Toyota’s lineup.
The new V-8 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo unit, essentially combining two 2.0-liter engines. Uehara hinted at the potential for a diesel version with a full hybrid setup, broadening its application. Although he did not confirm its use in the newly created Century ultra-luxury brand, it seems plausible given its flagship status.
Toyota is targeting over 400 hp for the new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the electrically assisted V-8 could produce an astonishing 900 hp. These figures remain unconfirmed until Toyota, Gazoo Racing (GR), or Lexus provide official verification.
As for application, the V-8 could find its way into Toyota’s largest vehicles, such as the Land Cruiser (LC250, LC300), Sequoia, and Tundra. Uehara emphasized the engine’s design for hybridization, ensuring compliance with stringent emissions standards. Notably, the V-8 will be utilized in non-plug-in hybrid models, indicating a shift in how Toyota approaches hybrid technology:
“We don’t rely on the PHEV system,”
Uehara stated.
The upcoming Toyota GR GT, debuting on December 4, is also expected to feature this powerful engine, signaling a new era for performance within Toyota’s offerings. The integration of the V-8 across various models not only enhances performance but also aims to achieve economies of scale for Toyota, making the investment in this new engine worthwhile.
With the automotive industry increasingly focused on hybrid technology and performance, Toyota’s V-8 could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of its vehicle lineup. The excitement surrounding this development is palpable, and consumers will be watching closely to see how and when these engines will be rolled out across various models.
Stay tuned for more updates as Toyota continues to push the boundaries of automotive innovation with its new V-8 engine.
