Turing CEO: Data-Labeling Era Ends as AI Training Evolves
URGENT UPDATE: The AI landscape is undergoing a seismic shift as Turing’s CEO, Jonathan Siddharth, declared that the era of traditional data-labeling companies is officially over. Speaking on the “20VC” podcast released on October 16, 2023, Siddharth emphasized that the demand for more complex training data has rendered simple data-labeling practices obsolete.
Siddharth, leading the $2.2 billion AI training firm Turing, stated, “Data needs have significantly changed.” He explained that while early AI models relied heavily on basic tasks like tagging images and sorting text, today’s advanced systems require a new approach—one that embodies real-world complexities. “It’s now the era of research accelerators,” he added.
The demand for sophisticated data is growing as major labs seek partnerships with AI training companies that can deliver more than just basic labeling. Siddharth insists that AI training firms must become “proactive research partners,” focusing on building reinforcement-learning environments that simulate human workflows across diverse industries. This shift necessitates recruiting human experts from various domains to create realistic training data.
Turing recently announced it raised $111 million in Series E funding, reflecting its current valuation of $2.2 billion. The firm also reported an impressive annual revenue run rate of $300 million for 2024, nearly tripling compared to the previous year.
The rise of AI data-labeling companies has led to inflated valuations across the sector. In June 2023, Meta acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI, valuing the company at over $29 billion. Additionally, Mercor recently closed a funding deal that valued its startup at $10 billion in October 2023.
This booming market has created significant opportunities, particularly for freelancers and contractors. Reports indicate that many have earned thousands of dollars monthly through AI training work, although this can be unpredictable and sometimes distressing.
However, the escalating demand has also sparked an underground market for unauthorized access to AI training platforms. An investigation by Business Insider uncovered over 100 Facebook groups selling both real and fake contractor accounts, despite strict prohibitions against account reselling enforced by AI-training companies.
As the industry evolves, Siddharth’s insights highlight a critical transformation in how AI models are trained. The call for more advanced data solutions is reshaping the landscape, urging companies to adapt quickly to remain relevant.
