Upstate New Yorkers Brave Snow for Black Friday Deals as Spending Hits Record Highs
UPDATE: Upstate New Yorkers are undeterred by snow as they flock to stores for Black Friday deals. Shoppers are expected to spend over $1 trillion in the U.S. this holiday season, marking a historic increase in consumer spending.
At around 4 a.m. today, Tina Douglas from Richfield Springs and her family were among the first in line at Kohl’s, eager for their chance to score exclusive deals. “We left home at exactly 4 a.m. to be in line for their first 100 people giveaway,” Douglas shared. Her family, numbering 15 through 19 in line, quickly filled their vehicle with holiday bargains.
Black Friday shopping is a cherished tradition for many families. Mary Hawks, a resident of Baldwinsville, expressed joy in continuing this custom with her family at Sangertown Square Mall in New Hartford. “It’s something we’ve done every Black Friday since the beginning, and this mall has that old-time feeling,” Hawks said.
Retail expert Shelley E. Kohan from Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management predicts a 3% increase in sales this holiday season, largely influenced by inflation. “Even though we might be 3% ahead of last year, part of that is simply due to higher prices,” Kohan explained.
As shoppers navigate this season, they are expected to focus intensely on value and make selective purchases. Kohan noted a significant rise in the use of buy now, pay later options and cashback apps, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence tools like Chat GPT to aid in shopping decisions.
Kohan also cautioned shoppers to act quickly on promotional prices. “If you see something that is promotionally priced, you should get it because there may be stockouts later in the season,” she warned. Many retailers have reduced their inventory of individual styles, leading to potential shortages as the shopping season progresses.
Despite the snow, shoppers remain enthusiastic. “The little bit of snow is no big deal. We live in upstate New York,” Douglas said, encouraging others to embrace the holiday spirit. Hawks added, “If you get a chance to come to this mall, do it. It’s worth the decorations and the feeling that you get.”
Retail trends suggest that electronics, toys, apparel—including jewelry and beauty products—are among the most sought-after gifts this year. As shoppers continue to explore deals, industry experts emphasize the importance of being prepared and making informed choices.
As the holiday season ramps up, keep an eye on the evolving shopping landscape. With record-breaking spending and shifting consumer behavior, this Black Friday is just the beginning of a dynamic retail season.
