Urgent: 50 MPH Winds, Heavy Rain Disrupt New Jersey Commute

UPDATE: New Jersey is bracing for disruptive weather as dangerous winds gusting up to 50 mph and heavy rain are set to impact the morning commute on Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for all 21 counties in New Jersey, effective from 1 a.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday.

Forecasters predict that rain will start to roll in around 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, initially affecting northwestern regions before spreading across the state. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek warns that the most intense wind gusts will coincide with the Friday morning rush hour, potentially leading to downed trees, branches, and power outages.

Rainfall totals could reach up to 2 inches in some areas, particularly north of Interstate 78. While thunderstorms may develop, the severe weather threat remains low. However, the combination of heavy rain and high winds is expected to cause significant slowdowns, especially along the I-95 corridor.

Urban flooding and localized poor drainage issues are likely, although widespread river flooding is not anticipated. Winds will continue to gust between 30 and 45 mph throughout Friday, even after the cold front passes late Friday morning.

Temperatures are expected to be unusually mild overnight, climbing into the 50s on Friday morning, but will drop sharply to the upper 30s and low 40s by the evening. As the cold front moves through, residents are urged to remain cautious during the commute.

Looking ahead, Saturday will bring cooler but dry conditions with highs remaining in the upper 30s to low 40s across New Jersey. A subsequent cold front on Sunday may bring temperatures in the 40s but no precipitation is expected. Forecasters are also monitoring for a chance of rain or snow on Tuesday, with a 30 to 40% likelihood.
