Urgent Help for Pets: Paws In Need Saves Lives in Livermore

URGENT UPDATE: Paws In Need, a vital nonprofit in Livermore, California, is stepping up to save pets in crises, providing crucial financial assistance for veterinary care. With the rising costs of pet healthcare, pet owners like Chandler and Colton Casey are turning to this organization for immediate support.

Just last month, the Caseys discovered a severely injured dog named Kip while hiking. The emaciated pup had been struck by a vehicle, requiring life-saving open chest surgery costing thousands of dollars. Thanks to Paws In Need, Kip’s surgery was partially funded, allowing him to recover and return to the trails with his loving family.

“It was super serious because that couldn’t just go to a general doctor,” said Lisa Williams, co-founder and president of Paws In Need. The organization has dedicated over a decade to helping pet owners in the Tri-Valley area offset medical costs, aiming to reduce overcrowding in local shelters and prevent unnecessary euthanasia.

On average, Paws In Need assists nearly 90 animals each month, primarily providing support for spaying and neutering. Since 2013, they have helped over 8,000 animals in Dublin, San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore. Williams emphasized the importance of making veterinary care accessible for financial challenged families, stating, “Just because you’re financially challenged doesn’t mean you’re not a loving home for a pet.”

This year, Janelle Schneider, who was fostering a retired hunting dog named Brandy, faced a critical situation when a tumor was discovered on Brandy’s ear. Paws In Need stepped in, providing $2,000 to cover part of the surgery costs. “They were able to get us in the next day,” Schneider said, highlighting the urgent care provided by the organization.

The nonprofit’s all-volunteer staff handles daily calls regarding medical emergencies, ranging from severe infections to limb amputations. Williams connects owners with veterinary partners to ensure prompt and thorough care. While they provide grants, she notes, “We don’t pay for the whole thing,” ensuring that owners remain invested in their pets’ care.

Paws In Need also addresses community issues, such as managing feral cat populations. Their recent initiatives include caring for abandoned kittens until they are ready for adoption and working with local veterinary services to provide necessary medical treatments.

Despite their significant impact, Paws In Need faces ongoing financial challenges. Over 90% of their $230,000 budget last year went directly to veterinary bills. The organization continues to seek donations and grant opportunities to sustain its vital services. Williams passionately stated, “We have to speak up for the helpless.”

As Paws In Need continues its mission, the community’s support remains essential. Their tagline, “Help us, help them,” resonates deeply as they strive to provide care for vulnerable animals in need.

For those looking to contribute, donations can be made at the Share the Spirit website, where every dollar helps ensure that pets like Kip and Brandy receive the care they desperately need.
