Urgent: I-70 Eagle Airport Interchange Project Relaunched for 2029
UPDATE: The town of Gypsum has just announced a vital relaunch of the I-70 Eagle Airport Interchange project, aiming for a construction start in 2029. This initiative is critical to addressing worsening traffic conditions in the rapidly growing Eagle River Valley, where population has more than doubled since 2000.
Residents are increasingly facing frustrating delays during peak travel times, impacting work commutes and essential services. With record numbers of travelers expected at the Eagle County Regional Airport, local infrastructure is buckling under pressure. The existing interchanges in Gypsum and Eagle are consistently overloaded, creating dangerous bottlenecks that threaten emergency response times and local transit.
Immediate Response Needed: This project aims to construct a new interstate access point between the overloaded Gypsum and Eagle exits. Officials warn that current conditions pose significant safety risks, particularly during emergencies like wildfires, which could hinder evacuation routes for nearly 20,000 residents.
The new interchange is projected to reduce traffic by an impressive 20% at Gypsum and 30% at Eagle, extending the lifespan of these interchanges by up to 15 years. This will not only alleviate congestion but also save taxpayers from the hefty costs of major expansions in the near future.
Gypsum Town Manager Jeremy Rietmann emphasized the project’s importance, stating that it will ensure faster emergency access and vital alternate routes during disasters. With significant regional partners, including the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, the project has gained momentum and support.
The Intermountain Transportation Planning Region has also identified this project as a priority, demonstrating a collaborative effort among municipalities across five mountain counties. As the town works on finalizing the design and securing funding, local leaders are urging community members to stay informed about progress.
