Urgent: Trailer for Ana Urushadze’s ‘Supporting Role’ Drops Ahead of Rotterdam Premiere
BREAKING: The highly anticipated trailer for “Supporting Role,” the new film by Georgian writer-director Ana Urushadze, has just been released ahead of its world premiere in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam next month, on February 2024.
This film marks Urushadze’s second feature, following her acclaimed debut, “Scary Mother,” which won Best First Feature at the Locarno Film Festival in 2017 and garnered numerous accolades, including the top prize in Sarajevo and a nomination for the European Film Academy’s Discovery Award.
“Supporting Role” tells the compelling story of a once-celebrated star of Georgian cinema who finds himself in a transformative journey triggered by a peculiar casting session with a young female director. Initially offended by the offer to take on a supporting role—far from the charming hero he is accustomed to portraying—he gradually begins to embrace the character, leading to a bizarre and fatalistic odyssey of self-discovery.
The film stars Dato Bakhtadze, known for his roles in both Georgian and international cinema, alongside Nata Murvanidze, who captured Best Performance at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards for her role in “Scary Mother.”
Produced by a talented team including Davit Tsintsadze from Zazafilms in Georgia, Ivo Felt of Allfilm in Estonia, and Zeynep Atakan of Zeyno Film in Turkey, the film showcases a collaborative effort across international borders. The cinematography is led by Estonian filmmaker Rein Kotov, capturing the stunning landscapes of Georgia, which serve as the film’s backdrop.
Funding for “Supporting Role” comes from several prestigious organizations, including the Georgian National Film Center, the Estonian Film Institute, and the MEDIA Programme of Creative Europe, highlighting the film’s significant international support.
As excitement builds for its premiere, audiences can expect “Supporting Role” to delve deep into the themes of identity and transformation, making it a must-see in the festival circuit. Stay tuned for more updates as the film prepares to make its mark at the International Film Festival Rotterdam!
This latest release not only reinforces Urushadze’s place in contemporary cinema but also emphasizes the rich storytelling that Georgian filmmakers bring to the global stage. Don’t miss the trailer and be part of the conversation surrounding this impactful film!
