UPDATE: The newly remodeled Ogdensburg International Airport officially opens today, marking a significant milestone for North Country’s efforts to attract Canadian travelers back to New York. This $25 million renovation aims to enhance the travel experience and boost local tourism.

Just announced by North Country officials, the airport’s upgrades include a modern entrance, revamped ticketing counter, improved security, spacious waiting areas, and a new baggage claim. Airport Manager Charlie Garrelts emphasizes that these changes are designed with the traveler in mind, stating, “It’s everything from check-in, all the way to getting on the plane.”

The state of New York contributed $18 million to this project, part of the larger $230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. According to Janet Ho, Assistant Commissioner of Finance at the state Transportation Department, the goal is to revitalize these rural communities and provide travelers with a first-class experience.

With this renovation, airport officials hope to reverse a troubling trend: a noted decline in Canadian bookings this year. “There’s been fewer Canadians booking flights, and revenue is down,” Garrelts pointed out. The airport aims to serve as a welcoming gateway for travelers from across the northern border, encouraging them to spend dollars in the local economy.

“Canadians are always our partners and friends,” Garrelts reiterated. “Getting them in here, using our facility, and traveling in the U.S. directly benefits our community.”

Starting in February, Breeze Airways will expand flight routes from Ogdensburg, offering services to Orlando during spring break, alongside existing flights to Washington, D.C. and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. This move is anticipated to boost traffic at the airport and enhance its appeal to both local travelers and those from Canada.

Executive Director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, Steve Lawrence, expressed optimism about the new facilities, stating, “We really appreciate Canadians and we appreciate their business.”

As travelers return to the skies, this renovated airport stands as a testament to the commitment to improving rural air travel and fostering cross-border friendships. The community eagerly awaits the influx of visitors, hoping this transformation will reignite interest in local destinations.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow the impact of these renovations on air travel and local tourism in the North Country!
