Volkanovski to Defend Title in Sydney at UFC 325 on Feb. 1
UPDATE: Alexander Volkanovski is set to return to the Octagon in an eagerly anticipated title defense against Diego Lopes at UFC 325, scheduled for February 1, 2026 in Sydney. This marks Volkanovski’s first fight on home soil since his lightweight title challenge earlier this year, generating massive excitement among fans.
The featherweight champion will face Lopes, whom he previously defeated by unanimous decision at UFC 314 in Miami last April. This rematch comes just 90 minutes north of Volkanovski’s hometown of Windang, making it a significant event for local supporters. UFC president Dana White confirmed the matchup during an Instagram Live session on Thursday evening, revealing that this will be Volkanovski’s second title defense since reclaiming the lightweight strap vacated by Ilia Topuria.
This Sydney event holds special significance as it will be Volkanovski’s first fight in his home state of New South Wales since his victory over Shane Young in November 2017. The announcement has sparked enthusiasm among Australian UFC fans, who are eager for one last chance to see Volkanovski compete before he potentially retires.
In addition to the main event, UFC 325 will feature a compelling lineup, including Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje facing off for the interim lightweight title. The winner is expected to challenge champion Ilia Topuria later in 2026.
Volkanovski has expressed a long-standing desire to fight in Sydney again, but scheduling conflicts had previously thwarted those plans. Last year’s UFC 312 event came just a few months too early, leaving fans to wait for this exciting matchup.
As the fight date approaches, anticipation is building not just for Volkanovski’s performance but also for the support of local fighters like Jimmy Crute, Quillan Salkilld, and Tom Nolan, who may appear on the UFC 325 card. However, former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has already confirmed he will not participate in the February event.
This fight promises to be a pivotal moment for Australian MMA, as Volkanovski defends his title in front of a home crowd, solidifying his legacy in the sport. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates as the event draws near, marking a historic night for UFC in Australia.
