Voters Approve $311M Spurs Arena Plan, Major Development Ahead
UPDATE: Voters in Bexar County, Texas have just approved a crucial plan for a new downtown arena for the San Antonio Spurs, paving the way for a transformative development in the city. In a decisive vote held on November 7, 2023, over 52% of residents supported the proposal to allocate up to $311 million in venue taxes to fund this multipurpose arena.
This decision marks a significant milestone in the Spurs’ efforts to secure a modern home, with team officials committing at least $500 million toward construction costs, as well as covering any potential overruns. The team will also pay rent at the new location, which will contribute to a proposed $489 million from the city.
Peter J. Holt, chairman of Spurs Sports and Entertainment, expressed elation after the announcement, stating,
“We love this city, we love this county, and the county and the city love us back.”
He emphasized the project’s potential to drive economic growth, promising around $1.4 billion in private development around the new arena.
The Spurs’ proposal was met with skepticism by some lawmakers and community groups, but officials assured voters that the venue taxes would primarily be covered by visitors through hotel and rental car expenses, ensuring no increase in property taxes for residents. This assurance seems to have played a pivotal role in swaying public opinion, as recent polling indicated doubts about the proposal’s viability.
Another significant measure passed on the same day allows lawmakers to allocate an additional $200 million for rodeo events in San Antonio, further demonstrating the community’s commitment to enhancing local entertainment options.
Holt reassured fans and residents, saying,
“We’re ready to do something really special that’s going to help the Spurs, it’s going to help the rodeo, it’s going to help all sectors of the community and it’s going to be right in the heart of our city.”
He underscored the importance of this project, stating, “This is something we deserve. Our fans deserve it. Our community deserves it. We’re going to believe and execute big things.”
Looking ahead, there is currently no set timeline for construction, as Holt noted that the Spurs are still in the early design stages. The team’s lease at its current home, the Frost Bank Center, is set to expire in 2032, creating urgency for stakeholders to move forward with plans for the new arena.
As the Spurs embark on this exciting journey, the implications for the city and its residents are profound, promising not only a new sports venue but also significant economic opportunities in the surrounding area. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
