URGENT UPDATE: The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has just announced a special Veterans Pass, providing discounted fare options for U.S. military veterans, effective immediately and running through the end of the year. This initiative, launched in honor of Veterans Day, offers veterans the opportunity to ride VTA buses and light rail for just $1.00 per single ride, enabling unlimited transfers within two hours of activation.

This significant discount—more than 50% savings off the standard adult fare—aims to make public transportation in Santa Clara County more affordable and accessible for those who have served our nation. Veterans can purchase the Veterans Pass exclusively through the Token Transit app.

To utilize this pass, veterans must be prepared to show valid proof of their veteran status if requested by a VTA Operator or Fare Inspector. Accepted forms of identification include the Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), Veteran ID Card (VIC), Department of Defense (DoD) Identification Card, or a state-issued driver’s license or ID with a veteran designation.

The VTA is committed to supporting veterans in their community and is actively exploring innovative ways to enhance public transportation accessibility. As part of this commitment, VTA will also participate in the upcoming San Jose Veterans Day Parade, celebrating and honoring local veterans.

For additional details about the Veterans Pass, including how to purchase it, visit vta.org or contact VTA Customer Service at (408) 321-2300. Please note that the discounted fare is valid only during the pilot period, with any unused tickets expiring at the end of 2025. Future fare changes will include a thorough public engagement process and necessary analyses.

This initiative not only highlights the VTA’s dedication to veterans but also addresses the pressing need for accessible transportation options, making it easier for veterans to navigate their daily lives as the year draws to a close.
