Winter Weather Advisory Issued for South Central PA: Up to 3 Inches of Snow
URGENT UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has been issued for South Central Pennsylvania as a significant winter storm is expected to impact the region on January 30, 2024. The advisory, confirmed by the National Weather Service, is in effect from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Fulton, Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties.
Forecasts predict total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches, with mixed precipitation likely, including sleet and freezing rain. This hazardous weather is projected to create slick and treacherous road conditions, particularly for the Tuesday morning commute, causing potential disruptions for travelers.
Authorities warn that bridges and overpasses will be especially dangerous, urging residents to slow down and use caution while traveling. “The hazardous conditions will impact the Tuesday morning commute,” the weather service states.
In the United States, winter weather leads to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries annually. With temperatures near freezing, drivers are advised to assume that icy conditions may exist on roadways, emphasizing the importance of safety during travel.
Residents are encouraged to prepare by following these essential winter driving tips:
1. **Share Your Travel Plans:** Inform family or friends about your destination, planned route, and estimated arrival time.
2. **Prepare Your Vehicle:** Ensure your gas tank is full and equip your car with winter essentials such as a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
3. **Stay Calm if Stranded:** If you become stuck, remain calm and inform someone of your situation. Avoid walking to safety and signal for help with a cloth on your antenna or mirror, using dome lights and flashers to increase visibility.
4. **Be Mindful of Snow Plows:** Provide ample room for snow plows to operate safely, only overtaking them when you have a clear view of the road ahead.
5. **Check Road Conditions:** Before heading out, verify current road conditions to make informed travel decisions.
As the winter storm approaches, residents of South Central Pennsylvania are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. For the latest road conditions and updates, you can call 511.
