Zach Bryan Reveals Sobriety Journey After Military Struggles
UPDATE: Country star Zach Bryan has confirmed he is two months sober following a tumultuous period marked by mental health struggles and alcohol dependency. The announcement, made on social media, comes after Bryan experienced a series of “earth-shattering panic attacks” related to his rapid rise to fame after a decade of military service.
Earlier today, Bryan shared a candid Instagram post revealing his battle with alcohol and the pivotal moment that led him to seek help. “Recently, I went on a motorcycle trip across the country,” he wrote. “For 20 days, I camped and rode looking for a solution. At the end of this ride, I was sitting in a parking lot in Seattle, Washington thinking, ‘I really need some f—ing help.’
The singer elaborated on how his military background and sudden fame impacted his mental health, stating, “Being in the military for a decade and then thrown into a spotlight that I hadn’t fully comprehended… had some subconscious effects on me as a person.” He admitted to feeling “stuck” in a downward spiral that led him to seek comfort in alcohol, not for enjoyment but to fill an emotional void.
In his post, Bryan highlighted the compounding pressures he faced, including dealing with public scrutiny, personal losses, and the demands of touring. “I was helping a close friend through a severe mental break, one of my other best friends was put into a coma by a motorcycle accident, and I was touring the country playing five, sometimes six nights a week,” he explained. “The anxiety I felt was paralyzing.”
To combat his struggles, Bryan sought therapy and made a “conscious decision to do something about my toxic relationship with booze.” He emphasized the importance of clarity and personal health, stating, “I needed to see the world objectively.” His family has been a significant support system throughout his journey, prompting him to prioritize not just his well-being but also that of his loved ones.
“I feel great, I feel content, I feel whole,” Bryan affirmed in his post. “There is nothing I need to get me by anymore.” He urged others who may be struggling to seek help, saying, “If you or any of your friends are too tough, too scared or too stubborn to reach out, know that the most stubborn dumba– on the planet did and didn’t regret it.”
In a heartfelt conclusion, Bryan acknowledged the societal stigma surrounding vulnerability, stating, “I don’t believe in absolutes… I just want to say it is okay to be weak at times and need help. God speed everyone! I pray this helps somebody.”
His message has sparked conversations about mental health within the music industry, particularly among fellow stars like Morgan Wallen, who are also leading nominations at the upcoming 2024 Billboard Music Awards hosted by Michelle Buteau.
As Bryan continues to navigate his journey to sobriety and mental wellness, fans and followers are encouraged to support one another and recognize the importance of seeking help when needed. The singer’s vulnerability may inspire others facing similar battles to break their silence and reach out for support.
