Daniel Day-Lewis Shines in Return with ‘Anemone’ at LFF

Daniel Day-Lewis made a highly anticipated return to the screen at the BFI London Film Festival on October 4, 2023. Appearing for the first time in years, he participated in a lively Screen Talk event where fans greeted him with enthusiastic applause. The occasion marked the promotion of his new film, Anemone, directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. The film, which had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, explores themes of brotherhood and reconciliation between estranged siblings.
During the discussion, Day-Lewis expressed his initial motivation for returning to acting, stating, “It began with a pure wish really to work with Ronan.” This desire stemmed from the “sadness” he felt about potentially not collaborating with his son in a film context. In Anemone, Day-Lewis portrays a middle-aged man who reconnects with his hermit brother, played by Sean Bean. The film also features actress Samantha Morton.
Exploring Method Acting and Personal Experiences
Day-Lewis shared insights into his approach to method acting, a technique that has drawn both admiration and criticism over the years. He emphasized that his immersion into roles is a personal choice, stating, “To me, it makes sense,” while acknowledging that other actors achieve great results without it. He countered negative perceptions of method acting, suggesting that the criticism often comes from those lacking an understanding of the process. “It’s almost like some special science that we’re involved in, or a cult,” he remarked, adding that it ultimately serves to enhance spontaneity during performances.
Reflecting on his early career, Day-Lewis humorously recalled his lack of experience when he began filming My Left Foot, admitting, “I was clueless.” He recounted the perception of different performance mediums during his acting school days, where theatre was seen as superior while film was viewed as less respectable. “It always bugged the hell out of me that we were basically performing for a group of privileged people,” he noted, eliciting laughter from the audience.
Day-Lewis also spoke fondly of his longstanding creative relationship with director Jim Sheridan, describing an instant connection upon meeting him. He expressed admiration for legendary actors, including Marlon Brando and actress Julie Andrews, revealing how their work influenced his craft. His discussion highlighted the importance of authenticity in acting, recalling moments on set that required him to maintain a level of realism that sometimes frustrated directors.
Family Ties and Future Aspirations
Ronan Day-Lewis joined his father on stage for the final segment of the event, discussing the intimate yet “claustrophobic” filming environment of Anemone, much of which took place in a small shed. He praised the familial collaboration, explaining that working with his father allowed for a unique dynamic where both parties gave each other the benefit of the doubt. “It was a joyful experience to have this time together,” he stated.
Reflecting on his career, Daniel Day-Lewis admitted to regretting his 2017 announcement of retirement following his role in Phantom Thread. “Looking back on it now — I would have done well to just keep my mouth shut,” he said, indicating that he never truly intended to stop acting altogether. He encouraged young actors to remain true to their craft, emphasizing the importance of steadiness in navigating the industry.
As the event concluded, Day-Lewis received a standing ovation from the audience, highlighting the impact of his return to the screen and the emotional resonance of Anemone. With a career spanning decades and numerous accolades, his re-entry into film promises to capture the attention of audiences worldwide.
