German Nurse Sentenced to Life for Murdering 10 Patients

A German court has sentenced a palliative care nurse to life imprisonment for the murder of ten patients and the attempted murder of 27 others through lethal injections. The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, stemmed from offenses committed between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Wuerselen, near Aachen. The court deemed the crimes to carry a “particular severity of guilt,” preventing the 44-year-old from being eligible for early release after the standard period of 15 years.

The nurse, whose identity has not been disclosed, faced accusations from prosecutors of acting as a “master of life and death” over vulnerable patients. His defense team had sought an acquittal during the trial, which began in March, but the evidence against him proved overwhelming. Prosecutors revealed that the nurse administered large doses of sedatives and painkillers, primarily targeting elderly patients, to reduce his workload during night shifts.

The court heard that the nurse, who completed his training as a nursing professional in 2007, exhibited a disturbing lack of empathy towards his patients. He reportedly expressed irritation when confronted with individuals who required more intensive care. The sedatives used in the murders included morphine and midazolam, the latter being a muscle relaxant also employed in executions in the United States.

The prosecution emphasized that the nurse demonstrated no compassion and failed to show remorse throughout the proceedings. Following his arrest in the summer of 2024, authorities initiated exhumations to identify additional potential victims. There is a possibility that the nurse could face further trials based on these findings.

This case raises unsettling parallels to that of Niels Hoegel, a nurse sentenced to life in 2019 for murdering 85 patients. Hoegel, recognized as Germany’s most prolific serial killer, committed his crimes between 2000 and 2005 before being apprehended. Psychiatrists diagnosed him with a “severe narcissistic disorder.”

In a more recent incident, a palliative care specialist, identified by media as Johannes M., began trial proceedings in Berlin in July. He is accused of killing 15 patients with lethal injections between 2021 and 2024. Law enforcement alleges he attempted to cover up his actions by setting fire to victims’ homes, classifying his motives solely as a “lust for murder.”
