Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly considering substantial budget cuts for the company’s metaverse initiatives, a sector he has previously promoted as essential for future growth. According to Bloomberg, executives are contemplating a 30 percent reduction in the metaverse budget for the upcoming fiscal year, impacting both the Meta Horizon Worlds and the Quest VR divisions.

The potential reductions could result in layoffs as early as next month, although no final decision has been made. During a recent budget meeting, Zuckerberg instructed his team to implement 10 percent cuts across the company, a directive that echoes similar requests from previous years. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that these deeper cuts are a response to a competitive landscape that has not materialized as anticipated.

Focus on Virtual Reality and Future Investments

Most of the proposed budget cuts are expected to affect the virtual reality segment, which has accounted for a significant portion of Meta’s metaverse expenditures. Reality Labs, the division responsible for augmented reality and virtual reality technologies, has been a focal point for Zuckerberg since he rebranded the company from Facebook to Meta Platforms in 2021. Despite this strategic pivot, the company has continued to incur substantial financial losses in this area.

In a statement to Mobile World Live, a representative for Meta Platforms emphasized that the company is reallocating some investment away from the metaverse towards developing AI glasses and wearables, citing the growing momentum in that sector. The spokesperson clarified, “We aren’t planning any broader changes than that,” indicating a strategic shift rather than a complete withdrawal from the metaverse.

Zuckerberg’s push for the metaverse has been characterized by bold visions of an interconnected virtual space. Nevertheless, the financial realities may compel a reassessment of priorities as the company seeks to navigate its financial challenges. As Meta prepares to make these potentially impactful decisions, the focus will likely shift toward balancing innovation with sustainable financial growth.
