Obama Urges Californians to Support Proposition 50 in New Ad

Former President Barack Obama has launched a new television advertisement in support of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s campaign for Proposition 50. This initiative aims to counter the effects of a recently redrawn congressional map by Texas Republicans, which critics argue could unfairly benefit the GOP. Obama, recognized for having one of the highest favorability ratings among living presidents, is calling on Californians to vote in favor of the proposition during the upcoming special election next month.
In a 30-second spot, Obama emphasizes the stakes involved, stating, “California, the whole nation is counting on you. Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield enough unchecked power for two more years. With [Proposition] 50, you can stop Republicans in their tracks.” The advertisement features imagery of Donald Trump and border patrol agents, underscoring the urgency of the message.
If approved, Proposition 50 would grant the California state legislature the authority to bypass the independent redistricting commission when crafting the new congressional map. This move is in direct response to Texas Republicans’ recent actions, which are projected to generate five additional seats for the GOP. The redistricting battle in Texas has been contentious, with Democratic lawmakers fleeing the state to prevent the passage of the map.
Gavin Newsom, widely regarded as a potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, has advocated for California to redraw its congressional map in light of Texas Republicans’ efforts. In August, Obama expressed his support for these redistricting initiatives in a post on social media platform X. He praised Newsom’s approach, stating, “Since Texas is taking direction from a partisan White House and gerrymandering in the middle of a decade to try and maintain the House despite their unpopular policies, I have tremendous respect for how Gov. Newsom has approached this.”
So far, the Republican camp has not engaged high-profile figures to campaign against Proposition 50. Nonetheless, former Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has expressed a complicated relationship with Trump, has criticized Newsom’s strategy. “I mean, two bad behaviors don’t make a right behavior,” Schwarzenegger remarked. “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
As the special election approaches, the implications of Proposition 50 and the surrounding political dynamics continue to evolve. With the stakes high, both supporters and opponents are preparing for a robust campaign period.
